This Indigenous-led initiative transforms sorrow into growth by planting native trees that honor the lives, resilience, and cultural heritage of the communities affected. Through each tree, we create a corridor of remembrance, healing, and connection across generations.
History of the Trail of Tears:
Between 1830 and 1850, over 60,000 Native Americans were forcibly removed from their ancestral homelands in the Southeastern United States to areas in present-day Oklahoma. This mass relocation, known as the Trail of Tears, primarily affected the Cherokee, Muscogee (Creek), Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Seminole nations, along with smaller tribal communities.
The removals were carried out under the Indian Removal Act and were marked by extreme hardship. Many families were forced to walk hundreds of miles under harsh conditions, with limited food, inadequate shelter, and exposure to disease. Thousands of lives were lost, particularly among elders and children. Despite the suffering, survivors preserved stories, culture, and language. Today, descendants honor that endurance while reclaiming and healing the land through initiatives like the Trail of Trees.
The Journey and Its Toll:
The Trail of Tears was not just a journey of displacement but a test of endurance and resilience. Families left their homes and possessions behind, marched long distances, and faced starvation, illness, and violence. Historians estimate that thousands of people died along the way. Despite this, communities maintained cultural practices, oral histories, and spiritual traditions that continue today.
The Trail of Trees recognizes both the tragedy and the resilience of those who survived, planting trees as living markers of remembrance and hope.
Mission and Purpose:
The Trail of Trees transforms historical memory into a living, growing memorial. Each tree represents a life, a story, and a connection to culture and land. Native species, including redbud, dogwood, river birch, persimmon, and black walnut, are chosen for their historical and ecological significance. Trees are planted along historic trail routes, in tribal lands, schools, parks, and community spaces.
This initiative restores land, strengthens communities, and provides a physical, enduring symbol of remembrance and renewal.

Reflection & Resilience: Coal represents challenges faced and the strength gained through them.
Connection: Sharing seeds and stories brings communities together across generations.
Stewardship: Planting, nurturing, and protecting the earth for future generations.
What We Do:
Distribute sunflower seeds for personal planting, community gardens, and educational programs
Provide coal tokens as a symbol of life’s challenges and resilience
